The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence is a major transcontinental and multidisciplinary research organisation aiming to to promote research on multiple, relational, and reflexive processes of world-making as they pertain to Africa. Founded in 2019 and renewed in 2026, the Cluster funds projects that contribute to re-imagining the world from African perspectives more broadly and to re-thinking what world is, how it came to be that way, and what it could become. With this, our collaborative research seeks to address and analyse the current global challenges and concomitant power dynamics, relationalities and agencies as they pertain to Africa and the multiple world(s) Africa co-constitutes.

Research Sections | Projects

The Cluster projects of AM 2.0 are subordinate to the six Research Sections: Accumulation, Digitalities, Ecologies, In/securities, Re:membering and Translating.

IAS Expert Search: Engaging Scholars, Enriching Synergies

The Expert Search brings together the collective knowledge and scholarly expertise of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence and the Institute of African Studies at the University of Bayreuth.

Publications

The members of the Cluster of Excellence have published a variety of monographs, articles and edited books.

Knowledge Lab | Working Formats

Located at the centre of its research activities, the Knowledge Lab interlinks the Africa Multiple Cluster's three main research structures: the Africa Multiple Research Centres, the Bayreuth Academy, and the Research Sections.

Fellowships

The Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies hosts international fellows at different career stages from across the globe, particularly scholars based in Africa.

Early Career | BIGSAS

The portfolio Early Career & Equal Opportunity, focuses on the support of early career scholars in academic and administrative matters and helps doctoral and postdoctoral fellows navigate professional development with a perspective on individual career progression.

2019 – 2025

Africa Multiple – First Phase (AM 1.0)

Research Projects | Sections (2019–2025)

During AM 1.0 the Cluster funded a total of 72 research projects at its five locations, subordinate to six Research Sections: Affiliations, Arts/Aesthetics, Mobilities, Moralities, Knowledges and Learning.

Junior Research Groups

The Cluster established four independent Junior Research Groups (JRG), each led by a postdoctoral scholar with two doctoral students, working on a joint project over a four-year funding period.

Postdoc Working Groups

The Bayreuth Academy promotes working formats for postdoctoral academics based at the University of Bayreuth to convene international and interdisciplinary Postdoc Working Groups.
