The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence (AM) is a consortium of five research centers at the Joseph Ki-Zerbo University (Burkina Faso), University of Bayreuth (Germany), Moi University (Kenya), the University of Lagos (Nigeria), and Rhodes University (South Africa). Funded by a joint program of the German federal and state governments, the Cluster addresses theoretical, methodological, and structural challenges in African Studies.

Since its establishment in 2019, the Cluster has developed innovative forms of collaborative research aimed at reconfiguring African Studies conceptually and structurally, while addressing power imbalances in knowledge production. During the first funding phase (AM 1.0: 2019–2025), the consortium built strong partnerships and new structures for exchange and interdisciplinary research on African and African diasporic lifeworlds.

The second funding phase (AM 2.0: 2026–2032) will further strengthen collaboration between the five centers and expand sustainable structures in research, early career support, research data management, as well as gender and diversity.
