Hugo Canuto is a Brazilian visual artist, writer, and comic book author known for reimagining Afro-Brazilian deities—particularly the Yoruba Orixás—as superheroes. His work blends traditional Afro-Brazilian narratives with contemporary comic aesthetics, influenced by artists like Jack Kirby. Canuto holds a degree in architecture and left a public service job in 2015 to fully pursue comics, merging architecture, storytelling, and visual art.
Works: Contos dos Orixás (Tales of the Orishas) – Celebrates Yoruba culture; won the Angelo Agostini Award and was nominated for the Jabuti Award, O Rei do Fogo (The King of Fire) – Second volume expanding the Orixás universe, released in 2022, A Canção de Mayrube (Mayrube's Song) – An epic saga exploring mythologies of the Americas.
