Mukhtar Bunza (Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria)

Mukhtar Umar Bunza is a Professor of Social History, Department of History Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria. He obtained a PhD in History the from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria, before he became a Fellow of LEVENTIS Postdoctoral Research, SOAS, University of London, ISITA Fellow, Northwestern University, Evanston, USA, and SACRI Fellow for Summer School at Babes Bolyai University, Cluj. Romania.

Bunza is the author of Christian Missions among Muslims: Sokoto Province, Nigeria, 1935-1990, Africa World Press, NJ, USA, 2007, Gwandu Emirate: The Domain of Abdullahi Fodiyo, 2016, co-edited a number of books and proceedings (such as: The Sokoto Caliphate: A Legacy of Scholarship and Good Governance, published by the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, 2006, Islam and the Fundamentals of Peaceful Co-existence in Nigeria, Proceedings of International Conference, organized by the Sokoto State Government and World Muslim League, 2014, A History of Yauri Kingdom from 1411 to its Emirate Status, Gaskiya Corporation, Zaria: 2015, Nigeria in Search of Stability: The Role of Religion, History and Language, 2019), and has also published more than eighty journal articles and books chapters nationally and internationally.

Bunza was Deputy Dean and acting Dean Postgraduate School, the Chairman University, ICT Management Committee, Head of History Department, and University Council Member representing the Senate, and Dean, Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies, former Commissioner for Higher Education, Kebbi State, Nigeria, and currently Member, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Postdoctoral Screening / Selection Committee.

His research interest covers the area of Religious Movements, Islamic Revivalism, Islamic Education and Institutions, and Inter-religious Dialogue.
