ABSTRACT

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is endowed with good music in both popular and traditional streams. Over the years, efforts are being made to preserve these music genres from going into extinction. Contemporary status of most Nigerian cultural heritages (both material and non-material) is best described as endangered. Efforts at preserving these musical heritages are obstructed with daunting challenges. The workshop therefore explores the numerous ways that have been explored to preserve our popular and traditional music of yesteryears. Through an interpretative lens, the workshop exmines the process of digital archiving, documenting, re-appropriating, re-inventing past popular and traditional music to fit into the mold of the present “genz" and the "generation next".
