Heute ist Bayreuth das größte Afrika-Zentrum Europas. Anders als in Städten wie Köln, Hamburg, Berlin, London oder Paris schloss die Afrikaforschung in Bayreuth nicht an koloniale Vorgängerinstitutionen an. Die Ausstellung erzählt diese einzigartige Geschichte – von den Anfängen in den 1970er-Jahren bis zur heutigen internationalen Bedeutung.

Was einst als politisches Projekt Bayerns begann, entwickelte sich schnell zu einem Ort intellektueller Begegnung – und auch gesellschaftlicher Reibung. Schon in den 1980er-Jahren setzten Bayreuther Forschende auf ein Prinzip, das bis heute gilt: Afrikastudien mit Afrika gestalten – nicht nur über Afrika. Heute setzt das Exzellenzcluster Africa Multiple diese Vision fort: als globales Netzwerk für Forschung, Dialog und Austausch.

Today, Bayreuth is Europe's largest centre for African studies. Unlike in cities such as Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, London or Paris, African studies in Bayreuth did not follow on from colonial predecessor institutions. The exhibition tells this unique story – from its beginnings in the 1970s to its current international significance.

What began as a political project in Bavaria quickly developed into a place of intellectual encounter – and also social friction. As early as the 1980s, researchers in Bayreuth were committed to a principle that still applies today: shaping African studies with Africa – not just about Africa. Today, the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence continues this vision as a global network for research, dialogue and exchange.
