For the next instalment of the Cinema Africa film series 2026/27, the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence presents DAO by Alain Gomis, which premiered in competition at the 2026 Berlinale.

DAO (2026)
Feature film by Alain Gomis (185 min.), France / Senegal / Guinea-Bissau, in French, Manjak, Wolof and Portuguese Creole

At a film casting, Gloria and Nour meet and become mother and daughter in front of the camera. Together with professional and non-professional actors, their family grows before our eyes. From a vibrant wedding in Paris, they travel to Guinea-Bissau to bid farewell to the head of their family. Between these two rituals, and between Europe and West Africa, life and death, past and present, real stories intertwine with fictional ones.

Moving between family memory, collective history and cinematic fiction, DAO explores what is passed on across generations and continents, and what remains unspoken.
