On  November 18th the Cluster of Excellence will be hosting another event within the frame of our well-received cinema lecture series AfriKaleidoskop meets ARTE at Kulturhaus Neuneinhalb in Bayreuth.

Screening & Discussion – DR Kongo: Poetry-Slam gegen Krieg / Sudan: Frauen in den Krieg

DR Congo: Poetry Slam Against War

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, 22-year-old slam artist Esther Abumba uses poetry to cope with the consequences of war. In her texts, she addresses the conflict between the Congolese army and the M23 militia, which is supported by Rwanda, as well as violence against women. Together with the Goma Slam Session, she also brings poetry slam to schools. Around 1,000 students have already been trained. Above all, the young poets want to offer hope and a sense of perspective.

Sudan: Women at War

In Sudan, the army is increasingly calling on women to take part in the war. The conflict has killed more than 150,000 people and displaced millions. Yet women played an important role in the 2019 uprising against Omar al-Bashir’s regime. Now, some are fighting for the army, while others continue to resist – in revolutionary committees, hospitals and emergency centres. Sara Creta accompanies women on both sides of the conflict in Khartoum.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmaker Laura Salm-Reifferscheit and scholars from Bayreuth

The event will be recorded and made available in the event media hub of ARTE and on the Cluster’s YouTube channel.

German version:

DR Kongo: Poetry-Slam gegen Krieg
