The new call is out – the process for the fellowships of 2020/21 has begun

20.10.2019

While the first fellows of the winter semester 2019 have just settled in, the Bayreuth Academy in the Cluster is already planning ahead issuing a call for new fellowship applications. In the academic year 2020/21 the Cluster expects to host up to 20 new fellows.

True to its concept, the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence is taking more and more measures to reconfigure African Studies at its conceptual and structural levels. One pillar in this endeavour is consistently engaging in knowledge and research transfer and building academic networks by encouraging scholars to join the Cluster and contribute to its agendas.

Call for applications

For this reason, a worldwide call has just been issued: Scholars in the field of African Studies are invited to apply for a 2020/21 fellowship at the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies (BA). There will be up to 20 short-term and long-term fellowship positions available.

Prof. Erdmute Alber, vice dean of “Research” at the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, explains: “The fellowships are designed to enable scholars of African Studies to pursue projects significant to the Cluster’s theoretical and thematic agendas. At the same time, they are immersed in a vibrant community of researchers from more than fifteen academic disciplines. Fellows will be in residence for periods ranging from one to six months, during which they will carry out their research in an efficiently managed environment with excellent working conditions.”

Eligibility and types of fellowships

All scholars with a PhD and proven track record in the study of Africa are eligible to apply. They may come from any discipline in the humanities and the social, technical and “hard” sciences. The Cluster specifically encourages Africa-based scholars to apply. The duration of the fellowship may range from one to six months between 1 October 2020 and 31 July 2021; the precise time period will be determined on the suggestion and availability of the successful applicants. The application deadline is 30 November 2019. For more information check: www.africamultiple.uni-bayreuth.de/en/Opportunities (sg)
