The inaugural Moi University International Conference on African Studies

On the 23rd and 24th of November 2023 the Moi University African Cluster Centre of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence hosted the inaugural Moi University International Conference on African Studies. Scholars from at least sixteen universities participated in this event whose theme was Reflecting (on) Africa: Positionalities, Practices, and Products, and whose objective was “to vigorously explore the epistemological and political underpinnings and implications of how Africa's peoples, histories, and cultures have historically been (re)presented and studied.” Given that most of these scholars are African Africanists who are based in African Universities, most of the discussions were largely about African Studies in Africa – the histories, the practices, and, particularly, the issues. Projects and proposals for practices of (re)presenting and studying Africa that accord with ideas of justice and respect that have currency in the twenty-first century – like the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence – were critically reflected on.
