Umar is a Mauritian poet, writer, photographer, and playwright. He has published four collections of poetry, two novels, and numerous articles in national and international journals and newspapers, including Jeune Afrique, The Africa Report, Mediapart, and L’Humanité. His work has appeared in anthologies in Mauritius and abroad and has been translated from French and Mauritian Creole into several languages, including English, Spanish, Dutch, Romanian, Arabic, and German. 

Timol is a founding member of Point barre, a Mauritian cross-disciplinary poetry journal. In 2010, he contributed the text Les yeux des autres to the award-winning African comic anthology Visions d’Afrique. He received a grant from the Centre National du Livre for a writer’s residency at the Festival des Francophonies in Limoges and has participated in international literary events including the Medellín World Poetry Festival, Poetry International Rotterdam, and the Trois-Rivières Poetry Festival. 

In 2018, Timol took part in the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and presented his writing and portrait photography at Yale University. His artistic practice also extends to theatre and photography. His plays include Le journal d’une vieille folle, La conversation, and the Mauritian Creole production Nou l’idéal. In 2022, his black-and-white portrait collection Graces, with a foreword by Ananda Devi, was published by L’Atelier d’Écriture. 

His current photographic projects include Muslim Faces: Breaking the Stereotypes, which seeks to challenge          stereotypical  representations of Muslims.
