INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF
THE AFRICA MULTIPLE CLUSTER OF EXCELLENCE

__

RECONFIGURING AFRICAN STUDIES THROUGH SPATIALITIES

CONFERENCE: 12–14 October 2023
INAUGURAL EVENT: 11 October 2023
VENUE: Campus, University of Bayreuth | Online

The fourth annual Cluster conference will be held at the University of Bayreuth from 11th to 14th October 2023 on the theme of “Spatialities”.

The conference will focus on spatial phenomena and their diverse expressions in cross- and interdisciplinary ways. The contributions will address the reconfiguration of African Studies through the lens of the spatial turn, which offers innovative perspectives on the nexus of place, space, human relations, society, and culture. Highlighting the processual and performative nature of lifeworlds as well as their entanglements with space, the theme of Spatialities will help us take the discussion beyond the categories of 'North' and 'South'.

The conference will provide a forum for scholars in and outside of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence with its locations (the University of Bayreuth and the African Cluster Centres based at Moi University in Kenya, Rhodes University in South Africa, Joseph Ki-Zerbo University in Burkina Faso, and the University of Lagos in Nigeria) to share their latest research and create a space for theoretical debates and intellectual exchange revolving around the conference theme.

The conference will be held in a hybrid format to facilitate intercontinental exchange. The programme will feature 3 keynote events, more than 30 panel sessions, as well as a roundtable discussion, a film screening, an artist performance and a book conversation. Participants come from a wide range of academic disciplines and include artists and activists. All sessions are open for the public. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend.
