Call for Photographic Contributions
“African Icons”

Terms and Conditions

  • Individual entrants are responsible for ensuring that they have read and abided by the terms and conditions before submitting their photographs. No allowances will be made for instances where this is not the case.
  • Any entry found not to comply with the rules of the call is liable to be disqualified.



Eligibility

  • The Organiser of the call is the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, University of Bayreuth, Bayreuth, Germany. The call is open to anyone except those involved in its organisation.
  • The call is free to enter and is open to Cluster of Excellence’s members and non-members.
  • Entrants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Prior to submission, entrants must not have offered any of their entries for sale or been paid for any publication of their entries.
  • The closing date for submissions is 23:59 CST on 15th October 2021. The deadline was extended to 23.59 CST on 20 October 2021. Once an entry has been submitted it cannot be edited.



Entries

Entries must contain the following:



Camera and file type specifications

  • Entries must be digital images. Each entrant may submit a maximum of three images to the call.
  • Images should be submitted as high-resolution JPEGs or PNG files no larger than 8 MB. Please keep copies of all your original and resized images safe. If you are successful in being shortlisted, we might request your original file for further judging and reproduction purposes. If the original file is not received, the image may be disqualified from the call.
  • There are no restrictions on the type of camera used, however, it is recommended that you use the highest possible quality setting on your camera. The original file should be as large as you can achieve with your equipment
  • To ensure your image can be printed at A4 size for the sake of calendar, the longest edges of the image should be a minimum of 2.500 pixels, with no interpolation (digital upscaling). Images of smaller dimensions may be excluded at the judges’ discretion.
  • Black and white images are permitted. Dodging, burning and toning of these are allowed.
  • Scans of prints are not permitted.



Subjects and Ethics

  • The Organiser asks photographers to put the welfare of animals first and to safeguard their environment and that they do not do anything to injure or distress animals or destroy the environment in their attempt to get their photographs. If the Organiser suspects that a picture was taken using cruel or unethical practices, the entry will be disqualified.
  • The Organiser also asks photographers to consider their own welfare and that of other individuals and they take care in their attempt get their photographs.
  • All photographers will be asked to declare that the images they are submitting comply with the call rules and that the picture information they provide is complete, true and accurate.
  • Photographers are requested to include details of their photographs and the precise location(s) of where their photographs were taken when submitting their entry.



Notification

  • Twelve (12) shortlisted entrants will be notified at the beginning of November 2021 by email. The full details of all shortlisted entrants and photographers will be published on the website of the Cluster of Excellence (www.africamultiple.uni-bayreuth.de)


Compensation of Rights

  • Each photographer on the shortlist will be able to receive a compensation for the rights of usage in the amount of 350 Euro by issuing an invoice to the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence over said amount using a provided form.
  • The compensation form must be sent in by 23:59 CST on 15th November 2021 to receive compensation for the rights to use this image.
  • If the Organiser is unable to contact the shortlisted entrants after reasonable attempts have been made, the Organiser reserves the right to offer the compensation to a runner-up.



Judging

  • The Organiser will put the entrants on the public poll platform poll unit to choose the shortlisted entrants. If there is a technical problem or no decision can be made during this process the Organiser reserves the right to judge the entries itself. The Organiser’s decision on all matters relating to the call is final, and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the call’s judging and organisation.
  • Should the quality of entries fall below the standard required, or less than 12 entries are registered, the Organiser reserves the right to forgo the call. Such decisions shall be unchallengeable.



Copyright and Reproduction

  • The copyright of the entire image must belong to the entrant.
  • Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit. By entering the call entrants grant the Organisers a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, and publish images entered into the call for the purposes of:

a) Publicising and promoting the call in the future,

b) Promoting the Organisers’ activities, including within their publications, website and social media channels and

c) publishing a 2022 calendar with all 12 shortlisted entries.

  • Contact the Organisers at africamultiple-calendar@uni-bayreuth.de if you have any questions about use of images.
  • Entrants whose photographs are shortlisted grant the Cluster of Excellence the right to publish and exhibit their photographs at awards event(s) and to use the image(s) for marketing purposes.
  • Other than the above-mentioned compensation for use of rights, no additional fees will be payable for any of the above uses.
  • While we make every effort to credit photographers, including in printed reproductions of their work, we cannot guarantee this.
  • Media will be allowed to publish the chosen images free of charge for the purpose of promoting the photography calendar without expressed permission from the photographer. The Organiser will try to ensure all images used by the media are credited to the photographer.
  • Third parties will not be granted permission to use images for other purposes without expressed permission from the photographer.



Disclaimer

  • The Organiser reserves the right to cancel this call or alter the rules at any stage, if deemed necessary in its opinion, and if circumstances arise outside of its control. Any breach of these terms by an entrant will void their entry. The Organisers reserve the right to request the return of compensation if, at a later date, the entrant has been discovered to be in breach of these terms.
